The BD Pyxis™ ES System solution is a secure ecosystem of hardware and software components designed to optimize the end-to-end medication management process throughout hospitals and healthcare systems.
The BD Pyxis™ team approached us for support with an internal educational piece that would showcase their connected medicine management journey from start to finish in an innovative way. What better way to reflect this innovation than with a virtual reality experience!
Our creative teams set to work mapping out an exciting and immersive environment that would enable viewers to really understand the scale of BD’s products and the ways in which they connect to one another.
This project was new territory for both BD and Outlook. Whereas our Moving Image team had previously brought their experience to 360° video solutions, this piece would be the first full-scale virtual reality project of this level.
The team were also working with a lead time of just six weeks from brief to delivery. With multiple stakeholders involved, it was crucial that the project was approached and managed in an agile, responsive, and collaborative way – which comes naturally to Team Outlook!
Since this project would require the expertise of both our Moving Image and Digital teams, a real whole-team effort would be needed from day one. To get the ball rolling the brief was given creative treatment by both teams. Our Senior Producer worked with our Lead Animator to create a moodboard complete with style frames to help communicate the intended look and feel for the team at BD.
With the style confirmed, the Moving Image team began modelling the featured products in Cinema 4D and animating them in After Effects. Our Digital team then got started putting the virtual world together in Unity. To show the connectivity between BD’s products, a series of flying orbs were used to bounce between medications, taking the user’s gaze with them.
A truly immersive experience would require clever use of sound and audio techniques. As we wanted the user to remain seated, a solution was needed to encourage people to move their heads and turn from one product to another. Our Developer solved this by fixing audio to specific objects within the VR environment to prompt the user to look to where the sound was coming from. The team also sourced a voiceover artist to record the script, resulting in an audio narrative that perfectly complemented the visual journey.
Since not every stakeholder had access to an Oculus headset, we needed to think outside the box when it came to enabling everyone to review the solution as we worked on it. Our team were successful in conveying the immersiveness of the VR experience by screen recording what could be seen in the headset – to positive feedback all round.
The event was a huge success, with two Outlook team members on-hand throughout engaging with participants to help them get the most out of the VR experience.
Not only was this innovative project exciting to work on for all involved; it also enabled us to showcase both our responsive working style and our prowess in delivering large-scale creative solutions within tight timeframes. The positive reception has generated multiple leads for possible future VR projects.
Your team was extremely agile and we worked very closely together to develop this experience in record time. We established a good communication from the start and helped each other to build the script and try to find solutions that would showcase the MMS connected medication management vision in an simple, accurate and engaging way. I’m really happy with the result. The team were amazing throughout the project and I’m very happy to continue to work with you in other projects.Marketing Manager, Infusion Delivery International
